Matthew Smith is a trial and appellate lawyer practising in downtown Vancouver, with a focus on securities, regulatory, commercial, and quasi-criminal litigation. He has represented private clients and institutional parties before all levels of court in British Columbia as well as the Federal Court. He advises clients on complex disputes, investigations, and regulatory matters involving significant financial and reputational consequences.
Matt has extensive litigation experience spanning commercial disputes, arbitral proceedings, and serious criminal matters including homicide and narcotics-related offences. As litigation counsel at the British Columbia Securities Commission, Matt conducted complex regulatory prosecutions surrounding cryptocurrency, fraud, market manipulation, and insider trading. During his time at the Securities Commission, Matt developed a particular expertise in the application of Charter principles to securities proceedings.
In addition to his counsel work, Matt is an experienced legal writer and policy contributor. He has authored and contributed to proposals submitted to government and institutional bodies, including the Association of Legal Aid Lawyers' submission to the British Columbia Attorney General advocating for the restoration of legal aid funding, and for the British Virgin Islands Arbitration Centre recommending legislative reforms to support the arbitrability of internal trust disputes.
